GTK ArcGIS Chapter 12 Analyzing spatial data

How does protecting streams, salmon and Goshawk nests change the value of timber that can be harvested?

Timber harvesting was restricted in the buff colored areas coded "not harvestable" which are:
  • within 50 meters of streams
  • within 100 meters of streams where salmon spawn,
  • within 800 meters of Goshawk nests.

For the entire Tract F in Tongass National Forest in Alaska, The estimated value of all timber, if harvested without restriction, is $1.526 billion. The value of timber that can be harvested is $1.052 billion, or about two thirds the original estimate.
