This is a text Pete has used in the past. While not quite as clear as the step-by-step cookbook provided by Getting to Know ArcGIS desktop (GTK ArcGIS), this book integrates GIS concepts within the context of a tutorial which is followed by a series of problem solving exercises challenges the user to draw on skills presented earlier. This is a more advanced integrative approach than GTK ArcGIS, a good resource for continuing study.
